Attorney Volunteer Training
Seminars
Divorce Basics Seminar
Each December, VLS holds the annual
Divorce Basics Seminar. It’s a nuts and bolts
seminar designed to prepare lawyers who have little
or no family law experience to handle a family law
case. Family law topics are presented by experienced
family law attorneys and the judiciary in a practical
and interesting way. We also offer a manual with
papers and forms for reference and a CD with the
most frequently used forms and documents in VLS
family law cases.
Recent Seminars
VLS seminars are planned based
on the needs of our volunteers and applicants. In February 2006, we held an immigration seminar to cover asylum cases, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) cases, U-Visas and T-Visas, and juvenile detention issues. In April, we held a landlord-tenant and housing seminar. In
2005, we held a bankruptcy
seminar covering recent changes in legislation and
the basics of handling a Chapter 7 bankruptcy under
the new regulations. We also held a training to
assist people seeking residency status under the
Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief
Act (NACARA).
In 2004, we held full-day seminars on how to handle
guardianship
cases and social
security disability cases and each seminar
had a 2-hour mock trial. We also held a “beyond
the basics” family law seminar for
current volunteers who wanted training on some of
the finer points in family law cases.
Looking Ahead
On December 5, 2008, VLS will hold our annual Divorce Basics Seminar. We will be mailing the seminar brochure and seminar sign-up to all attorneys whose work mailing address is listed with the State Bar of Texas and is in Travis County. This brouchure will be mailed out at the end of October.
