Volunteer
All of us recognize the significant impact everyday legal decisions such as divorce, custody arrangements, home foreclosure and disability determination have for ordinary people. These outcomes can change the course of lives forever. Yet, they require participation in a legal system that is often inaccessible to those who cannot afford a lawyer.
Since 1981, VLS attorney volunteers have been helping our low-income neighbors with their civil legal problems. Our clients have a wide array of legal needs, many of which are a direct result of poverty.
VLS attorneys help people and their families with important issues, such as avoiding wrongful evictions or foreclosures, preserving disability benefits, preparing wills and pre-need documents, assisting victims of abuse with family law issues, preparing guardianships – problems that often have a significant and lasting impact.
Our volunteers donate their time for a variety of reasons. Some do it to give back to their community. Some do it because it feels good to help someone. Some do it to learn a new area of law. Some do it to hone a specific skill such as mediation or litigation.
VLS wants your volunteer experience to be a successful one. We help our volunteers as much as possible by providing training, manuals, forms, advice, mentors and consultants, malpractice insurance on VLS cases and more.
Our volunteers consistently say that their VLS cases are the most personally rewarding and satisfying work that they do.
Volunteer. You will be glad you did.
