Volunteer Spotlight:
Lynn Sanders
By Maria Stewart, VLS Board of Directors
Who does Family Law by day and Family Law by night? No not Superman. It is Austin attorney, Jim Arth. Volunteer Legal Services (‘VLS’) has been lucky enough to have an attorney such as Jim Arth volunteer for as long as he can remember when Anna K. Meyers, Associate Executive Director of VLS, asked him to help and he said yes.
Jim Arth participates in the VLS evening clinic at least once a month, takes family law cases, and is a consultant and mentor for attorneys at Clark, Thomas, & Winters on family law matters. When asked why he is so committed, his answer is simple – He feels bad if he is not helping out because he has been lucky enough to have advantages that others do not. An example of why he continues to volunteer is he represented a woman with a small child whose husband left her with no resources or self-esteem. With Jim’s assistance, she was able to transition from a dependent housewife to an independent woman.
His dedication and devotion was recognized by VLS when he received the J. Chrys Dougherty Award this year. His commitment does not just stop with VLS, Jim Arth also volunteers for the Capital Area AIDS legal Project because he says the volunteer work does make a difference.
To volunteer with VLS, contact Anna K. Meyers at 476-5550, ext. 304 or akmeyers@vlsoct.org.
