Presented by VLS
J. Chrys Dougherty’s legacy as a private attorney and bar leader was instrumental in forging a strong and lasting partnership between the State Bar of Texas and legal services providers. During his tenure as President of the State Bar, he was a tireless advocate for expanding access to justice, with a particular focus on increasing pro bono legal services for low-income individuals. In addition to his leadership at the Bar, he also served on the board of Volunteer Legal Services (VLS), further demonstrating his deep commitment to public service. In honor of his enduring contributions, the J. Chrys Dougherty Award is presented annually to a volunteer attorney who exemplifies outstanding dedication to the principle of equal access to justice, regardless of income. Nominations for the award are submitted by VLS staff and include feedback from mentees, reflecting the profound impact these volunteers have on the community.
